According to NME, THE WHO's Roger Daltrey applied to replace Simon Cowell on the American Idol judging panel - but was rejected after programme executives decided he had lost his "rock'n'roll charm".

The frontman had previously called the talent show a "joke" and said the music made on it is "absolute tripe".

However, American Idol executive Mike Darnell revealed that Daltrey was one of around 40 people who put themselves forward to replace Cowell. The job eventually went to AEROSMITH frontman Steven Tyler.

Daltrey is to tour The Who's famous rock opera Tommy - with Pete Townshend's brother standing in on guitar.

Singer Daltrey performed the band's seminal 1969 album in its entirety at a charity gig in London in March.

Now he has announced he's taking the show on the road in July and he'll be keeping the spirit of the original tracks alive by enlisting The Who guitarist Townshend's younger brother Simon as part of his backing band.

Pete Townshend says, "I will be there in spirit and Roger has my complete and most loving support."
