Godfathers of Finnish metal, SARCOFAGUS, have released their new album Back From The Valley Of The Kings as a crowd funding project to fund the editing of the full album length DVD.

Sarcofagus frontman/guitarist/film maker Kimmo Kuusniemi states: “Back in the 90s I started to ponder that it would be cool idea to re-make the two first Sarcofagus albums Cycle Of Life and Envoy Of Death. These albums where recorded 33 years ago so the studio technology was primitive. I have always thought that the actual songs where quite good and worth for an update.

"It only took 20 years to be able to do this! Back From The Valley Of The Kings Album was recorded in ONE day studio session in 2010. Sarcofagus had only played 4 times together (one rehearsal and 3 gigs) before the studio session since our recent reunion. The idea was to get a fresh “live” and original 80s feel to the recording to do justice to the songs and stay true to the originals.

"In 1982 we did the Moottorilinnut full album length music video, one of the first of its kind in the world, so of course we need to have a full album length video for the Back From The Valley Of The Kings. When we performed live and recorded in studio in 2010 we filmed everything with two HD video cameras. We also filmed a lot behind the scenes footage and I kept a video diary of the colourful events surrounding the reunion after 30 years! We have been also gathering amazing footage from around the world; pyramids, boneyards, ancient sites, occult, magical landscapes...

"The film, as you would expect from Sarcofagus, will be something different and surreal! In the video we also return back to the original occult, magical and Egyptian world where the Sarcofagus started from! I am making the 13 music videos to depict what I had in mind while making the songs in the 80s. Working on this Sarcofagus Back From The Valley Of The Kings project has been for me a chance to create something unconventional. This is why I want to do this straight with the fans who like Sarcofagus and have been telling me how our songs have influenced them!

"In the 80s I had full control of the creation of the albums. I even had to learn to use the studio to record, mix and produce music. So now we are continuing on this same vein by just adding that we release the CD/DVD ourselves. I think it is quite poetic and fitting. I also prefer to have total creative freedom to do this CD/DVD my way rather than having to negotiate with a record label.

"Also it is very exciting that fans of the band can join us and really be part and influence the outcome of this new Sarcofagus adventure!”

Many fans came to Sarcofagus in Finland and asked why they didn't have 'Envoy Of Death', 'Deadly Game' and 'Die To Win' on the setlist. During Christmas time Kimmo recorded guitars for these three songs. In true Sarcofagus spirit these bonus songs will have a surprise lineup of cool Finnish metal musicians led by mighty Tapio Wilska (SURVIVORS ZERO, SETHIAN, ex-FINNTROLL, ex-SOULGRIND, ex-WIZZARD).

This is an exclusive project, no record labels or distribution companies are involved. The limited edition CD/DVD will now be the only releases available from Sarcofagus. Only people who pre-order either the CD or CD/DVD will get copies. There will be no extra copies available.

Sarcofagus has never been and never will be about money but the new Back From The Valley Of The Kings DVD is an ambitious project like the Moottorilinnut album/video was in 1982. Ambitious projects take a lot of time (= money) and as Sarcofagus is an underground band which does not make any money, funding this massive project is very complicated. So far all the funding (=time) for the DVD has come from Kimmo Kuusniemi and Tanja Katinka Karttunen. To speed up things Sarcofagus need fans to help!

Kimmo Kuusniemi: “The CD and CD/DVD will be released in September/October 2013. We can not set exact release date for the CD/DVD but the more we can afford to spend time on it the quicker it will happen. We will keep all supporters up to date with the progress. At present I'm editing 'Metallinen Sateenkaari' (Metallic Rainbow) and 'Wheels Of Destruction' videos. While waiting I hope you enjoy the digital release.”
