GLENN DANZIG - "If Somebody Interacts With Me, And They’re An Asshole, They’re Gonna Get That Back”

“I don’t know what your perception of my life is like,” says GLENN DANZIG.OK, it goes somethin’ like this: You awaken in a house with no windows to the smell of coffee (black, to match your hair and soul). You float, ominously, over a tangle of snakes and naked chicks en route to an ebony marble counter, where you pour sludge into a ceramic cup that says fuck on one side and you on the other. After a breakfast of band sluts over easy, you lift weights.
“Oh, that’s how it is,” Danzig says, laughing a little too cheerily. His serious face returns as quickly as it left. “My life is a lot of work. I’m a workaholic.”
Work might mean anything from music—he’s just released Black Aria II, the sequel to his successful classical concept album of 1993, or managing his comic book company, Verotik. That, or reviewing sketches for sculptures to be made in his image. With big, burly muscles, inverted-cross pendants, blood and big, pound-puppy eyes, all made from soft vinyl.
Whuuuhhh? These three Medicom figures (representing the three summits in Danzig’s career: Misfits, Samhain, and Danzig proper) are uncharacteristically whimsical representations. Although he’s a noted comics fan and creator, and despite the Misfits’ kitschy horror aesthetic, as his work progressed, Danzig became increasingly serious. Are we overlooking his fun side?
“I dunno,” he says, aw-shucksingly. “Usually people, when they talk to me, they’re like, ‘Wow. You’re much nicer than I was expecting.’ You get what you give. If somebody interacts with me, and they’re an asshole—they’re gonna get that back.”So it’s like the fourth Satanic Statement? “Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates”?
“Yeah, I would prefer not to waste my time on people. There’s so many different ways to get your vengeance [laughs].”Read more here.
