DAVE LOMBARDO Talks New PHILM Album - "The Guys In The Band Agree That I Have A Certain Musical Instinct And They Trust My Judgment"

Drum legend Dave Lombardo (Philm, Slayer) is featured in a new interview with Ultimate-Guitar.com discussing his new Philm album, Fire From The Evening Sun. An excerpt is available below:

Q: Did you produce the album because you felt, "Who knows my music better than me?"

Lombardo: "No, it isn't that attitude. I don't have that attitude towards my bandmates. I just know after 30+ albums that I felt I know what the music needs at times. Let's say if we only have three parts to a song, somebody has to come up with some kind of idea or direction on what the song is asking for. You don't wanna add too much - you don't wanna add to much time to a guitar riff because then it gets a little redundant. What happens to me is I'll listen to a song and it's like, 'OK, how long is this guitar riff gonna go on before I hear something else? They're losing my attention span.' So I kinda just steer the songs along. The guys in the band agree that I have a certain musical instinct and they trust my judgment.

Q: Is there a balancing thing that goes on between you as artist and producer?

Lombardo: "Yes, it does. With the guys, I let them be as creative as possible. But if something doesn't sit right, I'll give them my reasons. Most of the time they agree and when they don't, I step back and go, 'OK, you as the bass player - or the guitar player or as the vocalist - if you insist, go ahead.' But I will put up a fight every now and then. Stepping out of the producer's chair and playing the drums, I feel I'm constantly reproducing myself or trying to produce something better and trying to limit myself. 'Cause you don't wanna overplay. You wanna give the song what it needs and no more because then of course it just doesn't sit right. It's overplaying and it's a kind of look at me syndrome and I don't like that. I like all the musicians in the band to hold their place as the artists in the production."

September 16th marked the release of Fire From The Evening Sun via UDR Music. In celebration of the new release, DRUM! Magazine is streaming the track "Train". Listen here.

“I couldn't be more excited about the release of our sophomore album”, states Dave Lombardo. “I think fans will appreciate the many maniacal levels of our combined personalities showing their crazed head on this record. I believe Fire From The Evening Sun is a combination of being fearless, methodical, focused and charming. I recently read that those are the four traits that successful entrepreneurs and psychopaths have in common.  So.. listen at your own risk.”

Philm just wrapped up a successful tour of Europe in support of Fire From The Evening Sun, and have recently confirmed dates on October 2nd in Bogota, Columbia, and October 16th in Hollywood, CA at the Whisky A Go-Go. Visit Facebook for more information. More dates are set to be announced soon.
