MIKE PORTNOY - "I Have Come Full Circle With THE WINERY DOGS, Tapping Back Into My Roots"
September 12, 2013, 3 years ago
Drummer Mike Portnoy (THE WINERY DOGS, ex-DREAM THEATER) is featured in a new interview with Hip Rock Magazine. An excerpt is available below:
HRM: Your creativity and determination took you through a series of bands and landed you here at The Winery Dogs. Take us on a brief journey how you got here and how it feels to rest with a band of legends in their own right. This is a bit of a change for you, right?
Mike Portnoy: "It is a bit of a change stylistically, but I can condense 30 years into one minute. I started as a classic rock fan when I started playing drums over 30 years ago. I was listening to bands like THE WHO, ROLLING STONES, THE BEATLES, and LED ZEPELIN. I have come full circle with The Winery Dogs tapping back into those roots. Along those 30 years I went on a 25 year journey with Dream Theater, which was one of my more progressive rock and metal sides. Basically, I think this entire journey has led me back to where I began with The Winery Dogs."
HRM: Do you find that your style now with this group of songwriters feels more like who you are now. or as you have evolved into?
Mike Portnoy: "Well I can't say that it's more 'me' than anything else I've done. I think everything I do is a little bit of 'me.' It’s been my mission statement, especially since leaving Dream Theater three years ago, to do lots of different things because there are so many different sides of Mike Portnoy. Through the last three years I've done AVENGED SEVENFOLD which was one side, ADRENALINE MOB, another side, FLYING COLORS, TRANSATLANTIC, PSMS, all different sides, and now here we are with The Winery Dogs which is yet, another side. So I can’t say anyone is more than the other. They are all kind of equal pieces to the giant puzzle that is my style and musical taste."
