PERIPHERY Guitarist/Founder Misha Mansoor Talks Band's Sound - "MESHUGGAH And DREAM THEATER Were Very Influential"

Ultimate-Guitar.com recently caught up with Periphery guitarist/founder Misha Mansoor. An excerpt from the interview is available below:

UG: You were recording home demos that were subsequently released and that became the foundation for Periphery?

Mansoor: "Yeah, sure. I mean it's kind of interesting 'cause that's what led to the first Periphery album. I was just doing stuff at home because I could. I'd been in one other band and I'd seen how having a member who's a best friend is fun then that unbearable moment where you're not really on the same page and you kind of pull it apart from the inside."

UG: You were leaning towards that type of 7- and 8-string Meshuggah and Dream Theater style?

Mansoor: "Those were two bands that were very influential. Absolutely. But it should be noted especially with our first two albums, half of our material is on 6-string. It wasn't until our second album that we had an 8-string song. Clear (EP) had two 8-string songs and Juggernaut has five or six but that's kind of a recent thing. The main thing has been 6- and 7-string guitars."

Periphery's dual albums - Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega are out now. A full streams of both albums can be found below. To mark the release of the albums, Periphery have released a video for the track “Alpha”. Wes Richardson, who also collaborated with the band on the “Make Total Destroy” video, directed the clip.

The dual album releases Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega come together as a conceptual piece to be experienced collectively. The story follows a tale of birth and re-birth with the first album (Alpha) sharing the origins of the main character and the second offering (Omega) sharing the gut-wrenching twists and turns the take takes. Each album cover features original artwork from graphic novelist Justin Randall.

The album artwork reflects the story behind the Juggernaut releases, a tale of birth and re-birth with the first album (Alpha) sharing the origins of the main character and the second offering (Omega) sharing the gut-wrenching twists and turns the tale takes.  Each release is housed an outer, die cut o-card with the band’s signature P and three dot logo, which, once removed features a booklet cover from graphic novelist Justin Randall. Each album includes a 12-page booklet with numerous illustrations that add a visual layer to the conceptual albums.

Periphery have released a trailer for JuggerDoc - The Making Of Juggernaut, a DVD included with the Juggernaut: Omega CD.

Adam Getgood, bassist and producer of Juggernaut, states: "The creation of Juggernaut was a long and involved process for all of us, so having a crew on hand to document it was a real pleasure. It's amazing to be able to look back on the way things went down, and I think listeners will really enjoy seeing behind the scenes of the recording.”

JuggerDoc is an extensive behind-the-scenes look at the Juggernaut recording process from start to finish. The documentary allows fans to observe each member play through their parts for the albums without lack of detail in gear, technique, and full Periphery humor.

Director and videographer Alex Wohleber: "Directing JuggerDoc and working with Periphery was an absolute blast. The amount of detail and perfection that went in to the making of Juggernaut is an amazing thing to experience. We wanted to give fans the real deal, and this is it! I'm excited for everyone to see it.”

Videographer Jeff Holcomb adds, "How Periphery works in the studio is an experience I've been wanting to share for a long time. I knew a documentary had to be made, and the recording of ‘Juggernaut’ was the perfect story to capture.”
