Producer STEVE THOMPSON On METALLICA’s …And Justice For All - “I Wanted To Make Master Of Puppets Sound Like A Demo”; Audio

Grammy award winning record producer and mixer, Steve Thompson, joins Mitch on episode #196 of One On One With Mitch Lafon. Steve's has worked with many of music's biggest names including Alice Cooper, Anthrax, Cheap Trick, Cinderella, Dokken, Guns N' Roses, KISS, Metallica, Slash's Snakepit, Soundgarden, Tesla, Yngwie Malmsteen, and many more.

On the mix on Metallica’s …And Justice For All album:

"I wanted to make Master Of Puppets sound like a demo. That was my intention walking in on the project. The band (meaning Lars and James) would fly in to approve mixes. The first day (I was working with Michael Barbiero - my partner at the time), Lars came in and said, 'this is how I want my drums to sound. I told Mike, 'work with Lars on the drum sound and get it where he likes it.' They spent hours on that. I walked in. I listened to it and I thought it sounded like ass. So, I kick Lars out of the studio, reshape the whole drum sound, brought up the bass guitars because the bass and guitars work great together. They're like a unison part that worked amazing. Put the whole mix up and Hetfield put the thumbs up. Lars comes walking into the studio, listened to the track for about 10 to 15 seconds and he says, 'stop. What happened to my drum sound?' I looked at him and said, 'you were serious?' He said, 'get my drum sound back and take the bass down about six dB.' I thought he was out of his mind."

The Metallica discussion starts at the 32.56 mark of the episode.
