As previously reported, Canada's beloved prog-metallers RUSH have won a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award. The band members are among the laureates announced on March 6th in Calgary. Each laureate receives a cash award of $25,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and a commemorative medallion struck by the Royal Canadian Mint.

According to Rushisaband.com, there will be a Gala held this coming Saturday, May 5th at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa where the band will be presented with the award. It's still not known whether any members of Rush will attend or - if so - whether the band will perform.

Drummer Neil Peart spoke to the Cape Breton Post about the honour: "We are especially appreciative for the presentation of this lifetime achievement award now - while we are still active (Too active, our families might say!). Since our performance 'lifetimes' aren't quite over yet, this high honour is not just a reward; it is an inspiration. We will continue to try to earn it."

Tickets for the 2012 Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards Gala are available this location.
