Voivod recently confirmed that bassist Jean-Yves "Blacky" Thériault has called it quits, officially ending his second run with the band:
"It saddens us to announce that Voivod will no longer be performing live with Blacky. Jean-Yves has decided to leave the band for his own personal reasons. We wish him all the best. Voivod will carry on."
Thériault has been replaced by Dominique Laroche, who made his live debut with the band on July 12th at Festival Jonquière En Musique in their home town of Jonquière, Quebec.
Drummer Michael "Away" Langevin has issued the following statement: "Dominique Laroche will play with us at the Heavy MTL festival with Metallica on August 9, and then we will write a new album, which will probably be released next year. In the meantime, we will continue playing shows."
Blacky's first run with Voivod went from 1982 - 1991. He rejoined the band in 2008. Fan-filmed video from Laroche's live debut is available below:
Wikimetal recently featured an interview with Langevin, the only founding member who has never left the band. Away talks about: all of his influences, the metal scene in Canada, and he shares memories of when former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted was in the band. The drummer also speaks about the tour with Sepultura, how he listens to music these days, and Voivod's upcoming projects.
