ABHORRENT - Intransigence

Little is known about Abhorrent, mainly because looking them up on The Metal Archives just ends with me staring at a bunch of other bands named Abhorrent, none of which are these guys. So all I can tell you is that this is their debut, and they lay down a very tech take on death metal (we're looking at the Willowtip logo on this one, so that comes as no surprise). Also coming as no surprise is that this is high quality stuff, as is Willowtip's norm, the label here finding some fresh blood worthy of a bit of attention in the tech-death scene.

And they do it all to perfection, right down to the twirly noodly jazz-y breakdowns (man, one day a jazz guy is going to see what we call a “jazz-y breakdown” and never let us hear the end of it), the blasting and grinding, the endless switches in tempo and signature, and the requisite feeling of confusion and emptiness when it's all over. By that I mean the genre has basically spun itself into the ground, and Abhorrent do the sound to perfection, but when it's all over, there won't be a lot bringing you back for more listens unless you're a complete tech-death diehard; limitations found within are strictly sub-genre confines, so the rating reflects that, easily going up or down a point or two depending on who you are and what strain of extremity you enjoy kicking back with on a Friday night.
