ANTIGAMA - The Insolent

Long Poland's weirdest grinders, Antigama are actually in the midst of a multi-album streamlining process; part of this is that grindcore caught up to their technicality and zaniness, but part also seems to be a decision to be more concise in internal memos circulated at Antigama HQ, end result being albums like this, their seventh, which is still weird, don't get me wrong: "Sentenced To The Void" swirls like inverted Voivod grindcore, and "Out Beyond" is pure synth-driven weirdy old-school horror soundtrack, right down to the crazy prog-rock guitar solo. It's probably one of Antigama's strangest moments, which makes this relatively normal album one of their strangest ever.

All of which is to say, this band rules, whether they're grinding straight and narrow, dropping near-hardcore groove, or doing something totally left-field, or combining a bit of the former and a bit of the latter in one rickety-rockety tune, like "Eraser", which showcases both a simple grind and a bizarre marching shuffle-step not often heard in these extreme parts. "The Land Of Monotony" ends it off with a seven-minute sludge crawl containing some not-wimpy sung vocals, a nice touch. Awesome cover art, too, the band once again providing mind-melting visuals to match the tunes.
