BLACK TONGUE - The Unconquerable Dark

Gave this deathcore crew a 4.0 last time out, the band's rote approach to deathcore doing nothing for these ears, even if they handled the sludge/doom side of things well. So, happy to see that the opening cut here, "Plague Worship", emphasizes that, and also adds in some good dynamics with a soaring lead at midpoint before busting down into a groove that does deathcore right. So, damn, good work impressing out of the gates here, guys, and second tune "In The Wake Ov The Wolf" is cool too, the band utilizing most of the same tricks mentioned above but, damn, it's all working here, this song's slow-motion grooves really something to behold.

I'm not entirely certain that the sounds are all that different from their last release, but it's all working so much better, the band's sludge positively killing it in its oppressive heaviness this time around throughout this whole massively heavy album, the grooves actually having an effect beyond just dulling me to sleep. What an improvement from last time out; just check out "Vermintide" to get a sample of how heavy this band really is. They were on my top 5 worst of last year, so huge kudos to Black Tongue, most improved band of the year no doubt.
