BLACKMORE'S NIGHT - All Our Yesterdays

Although begun a cappella, the upbeat title track opener is built on a rock structure: lone singer, gently strummed guitar, silence, then three drum beats and the entire "band" kicks in. Along with pipes, electric guitar is prominent on the "Allan Yn N Fan" instrumental. The mournful "Darker Shade Of Black" initially employs violin and distant chorus of wails. At the 2 minute mark of its 6:05 length, organ, harpsichord and remainder of the instruments join, enlivening the mood, slightly. It's still devoid of actual lyrics. "Long Long Time" puts the focus back on Candice Night, an acoustic guitar ballad, with just a wisp of pipes and subtle hand percussion. "Moonlight Shadow" gets things moving again, in a "Way To Mandalay" style. "I Got You Babe" is the same song made famous by Sonny Bono & Cher (on their '70s TV show), here sung solely by Night, with jangly acoustic accompaniment.

"Queen's Lament" is another, short guitar instrumental, almost pure folk. Cello, tambourine and electric powerchords greet "Where Are We Going From Here", perhaps a prophetic title, given Blackmore's supposed interest in resurrecting Rainbow (for at least a few shows) next year. An honest to goodness rock number, with Ritchie squeezing out the notes! The lively "Will O' The Wisp" follows, tambourine most prominent "Earth Wind And Sky" takes the pace down again, shawms and acoustic, in a Medieval feel, before (what sounds like a banjo) commences the "Coming Home" finale, a reel that utilizes hand clapping. From a rock/metal perspective, one of their more thoroughly mellow outings. Also available in deluxe edition, with a DVD featuring a pair of music videos and a "making of" interview.
