BLUES PILLS - Lady In Gold

"The idea behind the video is to visualize the ‘Lady In Gold’ in all the different ways she can come. She can be that beautiful young woman or a scary old witch. It was a lot of fun and super exciting to jump into these different roles and characters.” That’s vocalist Elin Larsson talking about the video for the title track of this new album. She could also be talking about the way the band approached this album as Blues Pills took different forms with Lady In Gold.

The video Larsson is talking about fits into that category throwing some fans into a loop with the bouncy piano and the incredibly catchy vocal lines that sounded more like “Soul Pills” than “Blues Pills.” The biggest departure in style is the emotional ballad, “I Felt A Change” with Larsson’s captivating voice sounding golden (pun is intended), but the song sounds a little bit like “Lean On Me” and I’m asking myself, “Am I listening to Blues Pills or Adele?”

Another something a little different is when “I Felt A Change” immediately segues into the entrancing “Gone So Long”. The marching beat accented by the use of bells makes for a great listen and is a stark contrast to the ballad. Larsson continues to wow with her vocal prowess with “Bad Talkers”. Her voice fits in so well with the vintage times it’s amazing and how she vocalizes life situations in “Won’t Go Back” and “Rejection” and it’s something that listeners can easily get behind.

Fans will be more at ease with the second half of the album as it hard not to enjoy the guitar led and tempo changes of “You Gotta Try” and the spacey, crazy “Elements And Things” makes for an appropriate closer. There are some things to get use to with Lady In Gold, but the point is clear: this band is here to stay and they are not afraid to take chances and push their vintage sounds into the future.
