BRANT BJORK AND THE LOW DESERT PUNK BAND - Black Power Flower

Already a cult figure as the drummer in the influential but now-defunct stoner/desert rock band Kyuss (as well as Fu Manchu, Kyuss Lives!, Vista Chino and others), Bjork has recently assembled a new band, Brant Bjork And The Low Desert Punk Band. On its debut full-length release, Black Power Flower, Bjork handles lead vocals and guitar duties, with Tony Tornay on drums, Bubba Duprey on lead guitar, Dave Dinsmore on bass. From the opening Sabbath-ian notes of lead-off track “Controllers Destroyed,” you know what you’re going to get with Black Power Flower: old-school, fuzzy, doom-laden, bluesy, stoner-rock grooves decorated with psychedelic effects and some delightful distortion. Most of the time, the band is stuck in that typical mid-paced stoner rock tempo and only briefly ventures into speedier territory. Although this genre and style of music is rather predictable and formulaic, Bjork knows how to craft the quintessential stoner rock song. With his impressive resume, what Bjork has assembled here is pretty impressive and typical of his musical pedigree. Is Black Power Flower a groundbreaking release? Not at all. But it’s exactly what you’d expect and would want from someone like Bjork. Good stuff indeed.
