CONQUER - A Worms Demise

The trick with metal is that it's confusing. For example, when I told my editor on this here site that I wanted to review this EP, it's because I thought it was a new one from Canadian war metal heroes Conqueror, long since broken up (I thought it was maybe unearthed demos or something, and, I can't read). Not a word of a lie, I made it through about half of the first song before thinking "this seems a bit tame," and just when I started to investigate... yes, this is Conquer. Not Conqueror. And that becomes pretty clear by the time the horrible groove-death demo song "God Is The Destroyer" comes around to end off this three-song EP. Yup, not Conqueror. I dunno, man. That EP title, the cover art... this coulda been the bestial black machine from BC, but instead it's a vaguely not-good, kinda good thrash/death band from Ontario. I mean, things start off with promise here, the title track opening things off with a rowdy (love the raw production) blackened death tune that clearly has a love of old Celtic Frost flowing through the metal veins, but also tips the hat to more extreme death metal fare like Autopsy. When it blasts, it's got great aggression and feel to it, as does second tune "Hell's First Born." Can certainly get behind that. It's just the aforementioned grooves on the last track that take this from cool extreme metal to sports-bar Canadian content pretty fast, with a stop at the local 7-11 to buy cigarettes and completely exhaust me along the way. So, two good songs and one really bad one, makes me wonder about the decision-making process going on here, but based on the strength of those two good songs, I'll tune in again next time. Just no more groove metal, please!
