CONVENT GUILT - Guns For Hire

Shadow Kingdom are good at digging up these bands that just slap you in the face with their earnestness, Australia's Convent Guilt here on their debut doing just that, the band playing a super keen take on classic NWOBHM, which is extremely refreshing. Nothing here is heavy in a modern sense (the great production is almost baffling in its old-school feel), the band instead taking all the most melodic and rocking parts of bands like Angel Witch and Saxon and doing their thing with it, crafting catchy choruses, fun solos, just a good sense of light-hearted metallic fun throughout. As with many young bands playing a sound like this, there's a certain lack of confidence, particularly in the vocals, and it prevents full impact from being achieved. Give 'em time. This is the kinda stuff that blew the socks off a young Lars Ulrich way back when, and that same spirit is all over this fun, well-written album.
