DARKSPACE - Dark Space III I

Being exposed to a new Darkspace album isn't usually an exercise in revelation, as each of this band's records since 2003 debut Dark Space I has been centred around the perennially unchanging black metal/noise dichotomy that has brought this Swiss group renown and acclaim in underground black metal circles. Dark Space III I is a strange beast then, still moving forward with the usual Darkspace ritual but incorporating occasional EBM synths and drum patterns while also articulating riffs that might sound more at home on a Queens Of The Stone Age album  (yes, you read that right). Sometimes it works, especially from 3:35 to 5:25 in "Dark 4.19", and other times it doesn't, and though Darkspace is to be commended for finally breaking out of its very limited, though successful, mold, the methods it has employed combine to dubious effect. That said, album closer "Dark 4.20" rages with the furious black holes and revelations of old, both repairing your perception of Darkspace and creating hope that Dark Space IV, if it ever appears, will create the absolute desecration, nihilism and no hope of this band's initial trio of albums. Note: get ready to put some time aside, as Dark Space III I's three songs clock in at 28:11, 18:31 and 18:25 respectively.
