DEMONS FROM THE DUNGEON DIMENSION - As The Crow Flies

It's not too often a doom metal band comes out of South Africa, but here you have it, Demons From The Dungeon Dimension gaining back any points they lost with that name immediately just on the basis that they like doom metal and are from South Africa. Here, the band lays down 35 minutes of unique, fun doom; the opening cut, “Black Dragon”, starts off slow and jamming with a bluesy solo, bringing to mind Church Of Misery. And you keep waiting for it to come crashing in, because the drums are threatening to, but the vocals are laid-back and stoner-ish, creating a nice and unexpected tension. The song ends up fast and rockin', but still with a doom-y foundation; it's a good sound, and the band wears it well.

The next tune, “Raising Hell”, proves that they love Sabbath in South Africa too, the song trotting along with a doom double-step that, again, brings to mind Church Of Misery in their depraved, rockin'-doom glory. And even though the tunes get heavy, the vocals remain consistently chilled-out. It works, and even though the production is somewhere between gloriously ragged and, well, just ragged, it manages to work as well. Cool album here, and a band worth keeping an eye on for those into both doom and stoner strains of metal.
