DETHFOX - Natural Media Teleforce

The promise of "sometimes incomprehensible lyrics" sucks me in to this EP from Montreal's Dethfox, who deliver a deceptively not-heavy take on old-school punk rock, one that you expect from the cover art to be drenched in d-beat and crust and maybe even grind, but one that instead bops and rocks along like any number of old-school punk bands, just with a much gruffer vocal approach.

Don't come here looking for a sonic assault, this is more like relatively easy listening when your Toxic Holocaust records are spun out and you just can't bear to spin Crass one more time, Dethfox here providing a quick-'n'-easy nine-minute punk EP, one that will soothe metalheads' ears thanks to that gruff-vox delivery, even if, yeah, the tunes themselves end up sounding positively soft rock after the cover art's promise of something that will bring to mind the apocalyptic terror of blackened crust instead of the boppin'-'77 sounds enclosed within (which contain a hint of the apocalypse, but that's it). Whether or not you'll stick around for their upcoming full-length depends on if this particular brand of punk is yer bag: me, I'm passing, but I suspect that those in the know will be enjoying this one, as the interesting work of closer "Run State Wrong" suggests.
