On its debut album, Smokehound, Floridian Southern groove metal band Devil Gone Public play a multi-genre blend of influences similar to bands such as Mastodon, Lamb Of God, Corrosion Of Conformity and Pantera, to name a few. Mentored by Brian Johnson (AC/DC) Scotti Hill (Skid Row) and Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn (Booker T, The Blues Brothers), Devil Gone Public prove that it picked up a thing or two on its nine Southern fried metal tracks.
Opener “Aether Way” combines menacing Corrosion of Conformity riffs with a Pantera-ish groove metal shuffle. The Sabbathian riffs of “Euthanation” takes it up a notch, especially when the pseudo fire and brimstone church sermon kicks in. The hard-charging “Satan, Hold My Hand” is an energetic groove machine, while the earthmoving title track delivers raucous riffs and an enormous chantable chorus. “Blood Debt” sounds like rockabilly on ’roids, while “Poison The Well” delivers more of those sludgy Corrosion of Conformity riffs. Vocalist Garrett Moore has a great vocal range, able to shift from high pitched wails to raspy barks to melodious mid-ranged vocal harmonies with ease. Musically, there’s plenty of thick, bass-heavy grooves and enough transitional riffs and musical variation to keep each song groovin’. Play this one loud while doing multiple shots of whiskey!
