DEVILDRIVER - Trust No One

California groove-metal meisters DevilDriver has returned with its ferocious seventh full-length release, Trust No One. Frontman Dez Fafrara delivers some intense emotions and sets off a ticking time bomb with a brutal lyrical assault about life being destroyed by trust. This is Dez at his cynical best, even the album cover with its wolf in sheep’s clothing motif fits the theme. On its ten tracks, not much has changed within the DD sound, and that’s meant as a compliment. Even with the addition of new drummer Austin D'Amond and new guitarist Neal Tiemann, the chemistry doesn’t alter the band’s core sound and they deliver their same trademark grooves. Trust No One picks up where Winter Kills left off three years ago, yet adds another element of violence.

Opener “Testimony Of Truth” introduces a vibrant intro riff which is quickly followed by a thunderous rhythm section and Dez’s trademark gruff growls. “Bad Deeds” possesses an even angrier attitude delivered like a two-ton hammer. The slow-burning “My Night Sky” begins with a  brooding, ominous pace followed by mesmerizing guitar melodies and a chantable chorus. Other memorable moments on Trust No One include the orchestral cello bee swarm sound of “This Deception,” the ominous Middle eastern melodies of “Above It All” and the memorable, melodic break at the 2:53 mark on “Daybreak.” The band once again teamed up with producer Mark Lewis (Cannibal Corpse, Coal Chamber, Holy Grail), who by now, knows how to capture Dez’s volatile demeanor. On Trust No One, DevilDriver does what DevilDriver does best.
