DISMEMBER - Dismember

I’m almost getting the same rush as hearing Reign In Blood or Pleasure To Kill. It’s inconceivable to imagine a death metal band from Sweden churning out some of the finest extreme sounds on the planet - years into their career. But Dismember embody every pugilistic style, and they sculpture the beast into a pleasurable feast. Damn right the Maiden-isms are still there. But there’s also the addictive Sunlight Studio grind. And a few Entombed-reminding samples from a much better era. Top-notch brutality from start to finish. Click your iPod to track #6 (‘Tide Of Blood’) - I dare any band to topple it this year; it’s a soaring example of premier Swedish bitterness. ‘Europa Burns’ - the moniker attached to their current tour - is an audio assassination the likes of which the band do finest. ‘Under A Blood Red Sky’ is maybe Dismember’s most addictive and punchy track to date while your body fluids begin to boil. But as lead throat Matti Karki launches into the title lyric for the final time, guitarists David Blomqvist and Martin Persson take the Smith/Murray dueling tactic to different levels, demonstrating a genuine mix of old and new philosophies. Although the triple-punch of ‘Hills Have Eyes’, ‘Combat Fatigue’ and ‘Legion’ may be the feistiest on the album, it’s almost the more melodic that seem excessively extreme. The grand finale - ‘Black Sun’ - could be the most daring yet haunting piece in the band’s long repertoire. Truly, there isn’t much of a lull with Dismember - it’s straight-on, dual-guitar, Karki-led cranium crunch. And the fact that founding drummer Fred Estby is absent from the record remarkably (sorry bud) doesn’t take from Thomas Daun’s spiraling fury! Dismember stand triumphant on European shores - cheers to the Kings Of Sweden!
