DJEVEL - Saa Raa Og Kald

Featuring members and ex-members of Kvelertak, Enslaved, Orcustus and Nettlecarrier, Djevel is a coming-together of various Oslo scenes and eras in the name of recreating unaltered second-wave black metal. Like many before it (and many after it, undoubtedly), Djevel leans heavily on Darkthrone's early records, the first two Immortal albums and, unsurprisingly, early Enslaved, in the process re-creating the type of atmosphere that has become inescapably intertwined with Oslo/Bergen '91. That said, Djevel is a smart enough collective to modify and add to that foundation, the band no doubt knowing, along with the rest of us, that there are enough Darkclones in the extreme metal world.

In that vein, Saa Raa Og Kald is the home to refined, well-written black metal riffs that occasionally, and interestingly, incorporate some of Kvelertak's Jäger bravado, this record truly the channeling of another time and place, entirely. So, yes, anyone expecting wholly warped and expansionary black metal à la Nachtmystium won't find that particular poison here, but then there are those who understand that when it's cold, and when it's dark, the freezing moon can obsess you... and Saa Raa Og Kald is, exclusively, for that collection of the damned. Note: previous Djevel album Besatt Av Maane Og Natt is worth investigating, too.
