DYSTROPHY - Wretched Host

Very impressive indie release from New Jersey's Dystrophy here, who on their second full-length bring to mind Obscura-era Gorguts in a big, impressive way. And no exaggeration, this band evokes the same sorts of feelings and emotions that Gorguts do, which is saying a lot: add in a touch of swirling, swarming extreme death metal and also some sounds that bring the listener back to the glory days of Atheist and Pestilence, before technical death got overbearing, and the end result is just fantastic.
Opener "Apex" and second cut "Singularity" offering up so much to chew on so early in the disc. I love it when things get to an Immo/Incantat level of slow sludge despair, the open space really letting this monster suffocate the listener all the more intensely. Just excellent stuff here, the fact that this is an indie totally blowing my mind every time I spin this rewarding, exciting, and heavy disc. Check out closer "Nadir" for a good example of all this band is capable of, the nine-minute song not even wearing out its welcome for a second.
