ERIMHA - Thesis Ov Warfare

Blackened metal horde, Erimha, continues its innovative brand of symphonic black metal on its third full-length release, Thesis Ov Warfare. The Montréal-based band latched onto something unique on its sophomore release, Reign Through Immortality, by basing its lyrics on Mesopotamian and Sumerian lore. On Thesis Ov Warfare, the Sumerian theme is still ever slightly present, while the music is a little less extreme with a more guitar-driven approach. On its ten expansive tracks, the symphonic elements have been scaled back compared to the band’s previous release. They seem to be layered more conscientiously, which were composed by Ken Sorceron of Abigail Williams.

The harsh barks of Gore sound less like Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir this time around and possess more of his natural howl. Ksaos’ drumming on Thesis Ov Warfare is superb; consisting of blistering blastbeats, thunderous double bass rudiments and tasty snare and tom fills. The fretboard work of Kronik and Kthien have many highlights too, as they play some effective solos throughout the record, most notably on “Hymn For The Fallen”, “The Process Of Reversal” and the haunting opener, “Battle For The Concealed Star”. Thesis Ov Warfare shows an obvious maturity in Erimha’s musical growth and song constructions, and the band is well on its way to taking it to the next level.
