FOEHAMMER - Foehammer

Pretty fantastic EP here, Washington, DC, doom band Foehammer laying down three songs in an ugly 35 minutes, the sound being very much on the heavy, sludge-y, funeral side of doom. No clean vocals around, nothing but one continual slow tempo, guttural Cookie Monster singing, and riffs that are mainly just long down-tuned notes, although occasionally a moment of levity comes along ("Stormcrow").

Definitely first-album Cathedral but not as majestic or moving, more focused on an urban, modern, sludge-ridden sound. And the heavier, and slower, and more intense it gets, the better it gets: final cut "Jotnar" drops the bpms to an almost intolerable level, which is pure heaven to those who eat up this kind of funeral sludge, this sound that dips into a hardcore ethic in ways that are hard to pin down except to say that I wouldn't be surprised to find this on a crusted-over split 7" or being played live down at the local squat instead of the local sports bar.
