FULL DEVIL JACKET - Valley Of Bones

Tennessee alt-metal/rock outfit, Full Devil Jacket, had a good thing going at the peak of its career in 2000. Then vocalist Josh Brown overdosed on heroin and nearly died. Long story short, the band dissolved shortly after and went into heavy hibernation. More than a decade since the band’s debut self-titled full-length album, Full Devil Jacket has emerged with its long-awaited Valley Of Bones. On its ten well-written tracks, the band stays true to its original sound, while simultaneously pumping new life into it. The majority of the tracks possess a dark tone, yet are layered with a melodic, radio-friendly appeal. The band cranks out a plethora of healthy guitar riffs, pulsating electronic samples and hooky-as-hell choruses.

CD-opener “Killers” couldn’t have started out more unforgettable, possessing the right amount of edginess and melody. The explosive White/Rob Zombie-ish metal boogie vibe of the title track is sure to go over like gangbusters in the live setting. Ditto for “Picturebox Voodoo”. Its infectious romp and chant-able chorus will undoubtably get those asses shakin’ in the aisles at the local concert hall. Also, get your lighters (or cell phones) out on the Alice In Chains-ish ballad, “Paper Crown.” However, closing the album on back-to-back ballads can be a risky affair. But on CD-closer “August”, even with its blatantly sappy, Motley Crue “Home Sweet Home”-meets-Guns N’ Roses “November Rain” vibe, the song will tug on the heartstrings. Whether you’re a fan of Full Devil Jacket or alt metal in general, it’s impossible to ignore some of the crowning moments you’ll discover on Valley Of Bones.
