GEHENNAH - Too Loud To Live, Too Drunk To Die

I'll admit to having a pretty heavy love for Sweden's Gehennah, one that, oddly, only seems to increase as the years go on, so it's with some joy I put on this first full-length since 1997's Decibel Rebel. And I love them because of songs like “Scumbag”, found on this incredibly titled album: it's punk, it loves Lemmy, it's blackened, it's got a sense of humour, it's got a NWOBHM hard-on... it's got it all, and if you're into Gehennah you'll be happy to know this album has all you've come to expect from these guys, most of the songs raging past in a heavier (and less NWOBHM) manner than that one, and that works too: no bands do that sort of drunken blackened punk 'n' roll sound better than Gehennah (although Terrörhammer are giving them a run for their money now), and while I'm not convinced you need to own every album (can anyone tell this stuff apart?), this one's as good as any to buy, if for no other reason than the amazing song titles: “'Cause We're A Street Metal Band”; “Life Metal Must Die”; “Low On Cash, High On Speed”; “All Of The Decadence, None Of The Success”; “Gehennah Will Destroy Your Life”.

And while other bands who approach this kind of sound tend to stay rooted in a more extreme blackened world, Gehennah are basically punk rock with a heavy touch, and excellent songs like “Tonight We Fight” prove that, with a drunken middle finger extended to anyone who even dares to listen.
