GODLESS - Centuries Of Decadence

India's Godless are, amazingly, not one of the eight Godlesses currently listed over at Metal Archives, but here's what I know: they feature members of several other bands you've never heard of, and a dude from Psycroptic, who you probably have heard of, produced this cool EP. The bio says they speak out “against the maladies that plague modern society” and I actually, literally, read that as saying they speak out “against the melodies that plague modern death metal” at first, which makes sense (and is way more interesting), and also says a lot about how my mind works.
This EP doesn't play too well with melodies (it actually doesn't even try, which is just fine), but it does give solid death metal a good shot, the band doing the mid-tempo Floridian stomp (see the very cool “Replicant”) as well as they do quick, double-bass led grooves (not too groovy, don't worry) and solid, speedy USDM. A track like “Oneiros” shows Godless has some sense of experimentation and atmosphere to their tunes, while remaining solidly DM. Solid stuff all around, and while my mind ain't blown, I sure ain't bored when this brief and energizing EP is playing. Plus, love the one-upping of the Crüe in the album title there, intentional or not.
