GOLERS - In ’n’ Outlaws

Getting absolutely pummeled for 32-plus minutes is not such a bad thing at all. Vancouver thrash/crossover quartet Golers adequately achieves this on its fourth full-length release, In ’n’ Outlaws. On its 14 chaotic tracks, the band’s fast and furious sound is what you get when you cross Reign in Blood-era Slayer with DRI. Formed in 1998, the band creates its own inbred type of metal by mixing different genres of aggressive music. Named after a real life clan of inbred hillbillies in the 1980s from Nova Scotia, Golers’ twisted sense of humor (see Country Bumpkin”) is enhanced by razor sharp riffs and a chaotic rhythm section. The harsh shrieks of vocalist/guitarist Walter Mason (aka Chainsaw Charlie) only adds to the viciousness. Unfortunately, almost every track is one-dimensional and lacks memorability, with “Alcoholics Unanimous” being the band’s most accessible and inviting tune. In ’n’ Outlaws speeds by in such a furious manner, it’ll make you want to replay it at least one more time — only to be banished to your CD shelf (or deep inside your computer) after. However, imagining the raging mosh pits at a Golers' live show terrifies me.
