GRAVEBREAKER - Sacrifice

Debut from Gothenburg trio that recalls the ‘80s, down to the snare/wet cardboard kick drumming. Flashback to an innocent, bygone era, when we metalheads were desperate to hear something new. Not sure how it will play in the day of the Internet, when countless bands are just a click away. A mix of NWOBHM simplicity and (then) burgeoning darker European sounds, like Acid and Mercyful Fate. Clear, but slightly hoarse vocals, the title track ends with a harpsichord flourish.

“At The Gates Of Hell” has some echoing vocals and “cheap” Casio synth authenticity. Keys also briefly surface on “Kill And Kill Again”, a riff happy construct (before the term “thrash” was coined). Lots of sound effects to start/end songs. “Spellbound” falls right into the same shuffle as “Pray For Death”, before the slow, grinding “Messenger Of Death” closes out their initial calling card. Recommended for fans of Iron Fist and/or Snakepit magazines. Blast from the “past!”
