GRAVEWURM - Doomed To Eternity

Bet you didn't know Gravewurm are on album number 11! I do seem to have a sense that they release a lot of stuff, and I always enjoy their ugly blackened death when I put it on, the sense of fun, the feel of early Celtic Frost worship, and the rawness of it all always hitting the spot. This 35-minute album is no different, the album being special in that the drumming is the last recorded performance of Jim Konya, who here delivers the drums with the passion for metal the man always had.

While many of the tunes race past in an enjoyable, if not forgettable, blur of Hellhammer worship, when the band stops to stretch their wings during “Bury My Coffin” is when the weird realization sinks in that this band actually can write songs that stick with the listener as opposed to being just one big blur of good. Instead, the memorable doom of “Bury My Coffin” is great, and the rocking, near black 'n' roll of closer “The One True Soul Of Darkness” ends things off with a fun spirit, many horns raised high, the spirit of true underground metal—and of Jim Konya—given much respect through the tune and the album as a whole.
