GRIMOIRE - L'Aorasie Des Spectres Reveurs

The cover art depiction of a stream between mountains leading to a waterfall accurately depicts the music found on Quebecois black metal act Grimoire's new four song  EP. Utilizing recurring melodic guitar phrasing and piano accents, the overall picture it depicts is of a vast, calm and melancholic atmosphere, juxtaposed with a harshness of the natural elements. Limiting the use of keyboards and placing the piano in the background allows the guitar to come to the foreground, saving it from the trappings of normal symphonic silliness. Indeed, to their credit, Grimoire make sure that the black metal foundation is at its heart, with piano used solely as an accent to extend the vastness the music conveys. The production definitely assists as well, the clean sound allowing for clear instrument differentiation, making it very much a headphone experience. Perhaps a tad repetitive in parts, this release still succeeds in hitting its mark square on.
