GUTTER INSTINCT - The Insurrection

This one takes me back to when Prosthetic Records was just starting out and creating quite a buzz for quality bands that dipped their toes in both hardcore and metal, although Swedes Gutter Instinct are definitely more the Entombed-lovin' latter than the, well, Entombed-lovin' former. But through the chainsaw buzz of the guitars on this four-song EP one can hear a bit of a hardcore bounce, or at the very least a touch of a loose death 'n' roll groove... or maybe it's just that I thought this band was a hardcore band for weeks before actually spinning this based purely on their name alone.

That could be it, because, yeah, what the listener gets here is basically no-frills Swedeath (although further investigation reveals a very crust-punk-looking cover for their 2013 demo, not that I'm complaining whenever a band combines those two sounds), done with just enough ugly, blackened grinding to keep any freaky happy, really ("Under The Scythe" starts to get to swarming horrible-death places that Portal or Dire Omen inhabit). It's not doing anything amazingly, but it's doing several things very well indeed, and at a mere 18 minutes, the lasting impression is a good one: I'll come back for more, and will be curious to see how they hold up for a full-length.
