HAMMERDRONE - Clone Of Europa

We've been following, covering, ranking and rating Calgary's HAMMERDRONE for a while now, and they've sat at a consistent 8/10, which is remarkably high place for an indie band from Alberta to sit. But they came out of the gates hard with their debut EP and follow-up single, and here the guys sit down to craft their full-length statement of purpose. I've mentioned melodic death and black before with this band, and that's what we get here again, but it's better than those bland descriptors would have you believe. The authority all over opener 'Prometheus Is Murdered' matches the regal feeling the cover art gives off (finally, the band's presentation has caught up to their tunes). 'Death In The Yukon' is the best Canadian metal song title in a while, and tunes like the great, dynamic title track have excellent jagged riffing along with wicked closed-hi-hat dynamics. Main reason this one goes down a half-point this time is there's just too much here: the band's shorter releases slay because when it's over you want more. After this 50-minute one ends, you're probably not reaching for the play button again right away. But you will eventually, as melodic death of this calibre may not be hard to find, but it rarely has this much classiness and energy behind it. This will be the album that will get Hammerdrone some serious attention in the metal underground.
