Independent music distribution label Imperative Music presents its Volume 7 compilation, consisting of mostly unknown South American metal bands. It consists of 20 tracks of various genres from new and promising unsigned bands from all over the world. Mostly Brazilian bands are featured, but other countries are represented as well. There are several stand-outs on Volume 7. From the thrashy, Venom-styled black metal of Brazil’s Amen Corner, to the bludgeoning, barbaric riffs of Switzerland’s Undead Vision, to the sharp, angular crossover thrash riffing of Brazilians Toxic Maze, who sound like a minor league version of Municipal Waste. Melodic death metal/metalcore band Greedy Black Hole from Taiwan play down-tuned Pantera-esque riffs on “The Last Judgement,” proving to be an interesting and praise-worthy take on the genre. Punky, groove-based riffs and early-era Sepultura influences fill up Brazilian-based metal hardcore band Rotten Filthy’s “The Garbage’s Queen.” Brazilian thrashers Cellmys and Southern also deserve a mention. However, not every track on Volume 7 is a winner. The off-setting vocals and standard metalcore breakdowns on “Mirrors” from Germany’s If All Ropes Tear misses the mark, while France’s Red Dead play some unimpressive yet fairly effective European death metal. CD-closer “Get Ready!” by Swiss hard rockers Worry Blast ends the disc with some raucous, fist-pumping AC/DC-ish riffs and melodies. Imperative Music’s Volume 7 compilation is a pretty decent gateway for discovering newer underground metal bands that you might not have had the chance to know about otherwise. Volume 8 is just around the corner, slated for a November release.
