INSOMNIUM - Shadows Of The Dying Sun

Finland’s INSOMNIUM has consistently written elegant, glass-encased records that are absurdly listenable and, predictably, the band has never been rewarded for it with the same splendour other melodic death metal bands have seen. Shadows Of The Dying Sun, the group’s sixth album, is an impressive creative statement that paints a morose picture that is both Nordic autumn and winter, though strains of hope and light do make their way through the eternal fog and mist. Inhabiting the exact middle ground between early IN FLAMES and mid-era KATATONIA, Insomnium is a machine that writes and executes material that is menacing, mature and maddeningly affecting, as Shadows Of The Dying Sun is no exception to that rule. Though Insomnium has always fallen prey to bits of prog dramatics that, really, have no place on their records, far more people need to become acquainted with Insomnium’s brand of desolation and celebration: Shadows Of The Dying Sun, once again, proves that there’s no time like the present.
