INSURRECTION - Catatonic

Holland-based death/thrashers Insurrection have their sound down pat, the band running through riffs and licks on cuts like standout "Conspiracy" as if they're old pros. The drumming is solid, the guitar work excellent, the end result being a melodic death EP (a long one, at 27 minutes) that is as capable as any you've heard in the past five years. The interplay between the drumming and the guitar work is excellent and the brief moments of individuality (the doom-y intro to closer "Moribund", for example) show great promise. The trouble comes when you start trying to tell this band apart from any number of other melodic death bands: there's the polite blasting part, the Meshuggah-y part, the Gothenparts... Man, are these guys ever skilled; let's hope they use it next time out to craft a sound that is less forgettable and more Insurrection.
