IRON MOUNTAIN - Unum

Experimental instrumental band Iron Mountain’s debut album, Unum, was originally self-released in early 2015, but now it gets revised artwork and packaging with this reissue by underground label Prophecy Productions. Its five tracks are loaded with elements of krautrock, metal, Irish/Celtic folk rock and psych rock, which creates a unique and dynamic experience.

Opener “Bonfires” is a moody affair complete with some echoy guitar tones amidst pleasing feedback with a slow and powerful buildup. The track soon picks up the pace with raucous Celtic melodies, space rock riffs and a Mahavishnu Orchestra-esque jazz fusion violin segment. “Enthralldom” combines worldly Pink Floyd flourishes, a booming drum beat reminiscent of the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” with Jethro Tull-like crescendos. From the avant garde-ish “Blitz,” to the Native American Indian vibe of “Powow,” to the vibrating soundscapes of 13-plus minute closer “Opium,” Unum is a diverse and adventurous affair. Although some tracks are a little long-winded, Iron Mountain manages to keep things energetic and interesting throughout the album.
