KILLERS LODGE - Alma Cachonda

This one got off to a rough start, the production and stiff playing threatening to make this sound like the every town band opening for Anvil when they play the local peeler club, but luckily the roughshod vocals quickly take it from a place of unintentional cheese to one of a more scuzzy, well, intentional cheese. By that I mean I think I smell more Gehennah than, to keep the connection going, Anvil in this Italian band's collection. Some songs, like the cool “By Inferno's Light”, have a good old trad metal feel to them as well, as does “In The Gypsy Raven's Deep Space”, which frolics along at a Grave Digger pace and gets to a Grave Digger place. Elsewhere, the vibe tries to be fun, like a lite take on death 'n' roll, but things feel a bit too stiff all around to really be fun... but it's getting there. It's almost fun, which ain't half bad, and there's a good forged-in-steel feel to the proceedings, songs like “Ever Steel” nothing if not pure love for metal, and even if you might be tempted to quickly turn the volume down a notch if someone catches you listening to this (look, those vocals, bless 'em, ain't pretty), you gotta love the pure heart behind it all.
