LACUNA COIL - Unleashed Memories

Since signing to the label, these female-fronted Italians have lived in the shadow of stablemates The Gathering and, to a lesser extent, Theater Of Tragedy. Employing a similar melancholic musical outlook, with a female vocalist (although Cristina Scabbia splits time with a male counterpart), the comparisons were inevitable, if not entirely accurate. But with the former adopting a more psychedelic vibe and the latter off Century Media and toying with mechanized beats, the time seems right for many to discover Lacuna Coil. Although In A Reverie, and the pair of EPs which preceded Unleashed Memories, never hammered home the Anneke Van Giersbergen similarities to these ears, that is no longer true. Anyone longing for the beautiful structures The Gathering abandoned following Nighttime Bird and Mandylion should purchase these ten tunes ASAP! A dynamic album, from minimalism and whispers, to depressive guitar tones, the angelic voice and synthesizers wander through several styles as well. Both 'Distant Sun' and 'When A Dead Man Walks' recall Paradise Lost, circa One Second. And with Andrea Ferro doing his best Nick Holmes impersonation, the deja vu simulation is all the more eerie. Elsewhere, Scabbia warbles through atmospheric numbers that push the boundaries of what is still considered "metal," from a tuneful 'Senzafine', sung in their native tongue, to the paradoxical '1:19', which lasts almost five minutes. As a bonus, North American copies are supposed to include last year's five song Halflife EP.
