MAKE - The Golden Veil

I'm as tired out as anyone of anything remotely post-metal or metalgaze, but here's a good one, North Carolina's MAKE (MAN I HATE IT WHEN BANDS GO ALL CAPS WITH THEIR NAME) managing to pull off the long, long, long (long) songs while only making the listener check their watch occasionally; when they drop and lock into a groove, it sounds great, the band channelling Isis at their mid-paced chunky best.

But when things are meandering, it works, sure, but only sometimes: "The Architect" is 11 minutes long but manages to create a powerful atmosphere instead of one of tedium; other songs here try and fail, simply falling into the background. I still feel like these bands will just never be as moving as Neurosis or Isis and every time one of these albums is done I just file it away and shrug my shoulders, but I must give credit where it's due: this band has crafted an album that does what it has set out to do, and does it well. But there's a sense of ennui seeping through these songs, as obviously meticulously crafted as they are. Worth a casual listen for the moments of crushing glory to be had, I'm just not convinced I'll ever be coming back for more listens.
