MALFORMITY - Lectures On The Apocalypse

Atlanta death metal band Malformity pull no punches here on their debut EP, the band clearly in love with the Floridian death metal scene of years past. And I appreciate the EP's brevity and near-sloppy execution: this one swings in fast, does its thing, and bolts before you have a chance to start daydreaming about those Obituary albums you never actually heard and really should get to some time, and once in a while, such as the cool getting-faster-and-faster ending of “Lost Necropolis” or weirdo-is-that-tech-or-just-a-mess? intro to “Ignite The Storm” (which also later drops some Obituarian groove) the band actually makes your ears perk up for a minute.

Not bad for a debut EP, although most of it races past in much the same manner that many DM EPs have raced past over the years, the band definitely having talent and a love for the genre, personality being the main struggling point not just for Malformity but for legions of other bands loudly plying away at the trade two nights a week in the garage as posters of Death and Malevolent Creation silently urge them to keep fighting the good fight regardless. Heck, I'll tune in next time to see what Malformity get up to, as this EP has me sold on the passion alone.
