MEGADETH - Capitol Punishment

(Capitol/EMI)
The first greatest hits album from Megadeth has arrived, and we must give Mega Dave some credit for keeping the label weasels at bay this long. His partnership with the other Dave (Ellefson, bass) is now fifteen years old and normally hits packages come out after five or six years together. Most obvious is the omission of anything from the debut album, Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good! Simply because that record was released on Combat and not Capitol: don't ya love label politics? Punishment acts as a nice career retrospective, but the real appeal of this package is the two brand new songs 'Kill The King' and 'Dread & The Fugitive Mind'. 'King' has a catchy chug-chug riff with some cool soloing underneath the chorus; much heavier than the crap found on Risk. 'Dread' is a close cousin to 'Sweating Bullets' with its spoken style intro and effective use of melody. So it seems that there's still hope for Mustaine and co. Redemption may come with the next studio record.
