Floridian modern prog/power metal band, Mindcage, has re-released its debut album, Our Own Devices. The Dystopian-themed concept album was originally released in 2013 and was self-produced by the band and engineered by Michael Wagener (Ozzy, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, etc). Its original concept is completed by new songs and new cover artwork. On its 10 tracks, elements of bands such as Queensryche and Nevermore are combined with classic heavy metal influences reminiscent of stalwarts such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Mindcage isn’t really a new band, as the core members have been around for awhile, first forming in 1996. From the opening salvo, “For All Mankind (The Dark Design),” you’ll sense an immediate chemistry between the band. Jeff Hignite’s vocals are an homage to veteran wailers Geoff Tate and Warrel Dane. His vocal phrasings are straight-up modern prog-influenced, and they sound great. The guitar work of Dietrick Hardwick is pretty stellar, performed with proficient technicality. Our Own Devices is a solid modern prog metal album with old-school influences. It’s perhaps just a little too familiar in some places, but it’s engaging and thought-provoking nonetheless.
