MUSHROOMHEAD - The Righteous & The Butterfly

Mushroomhead has always been unfairly compared to Slipknot. The Cleveland nine-piece alt/industrial metal band has managed to carve out its own niche since its 1993 formation. Even though both bands have nine members, both wear evil masks and has a horror movie image, musically, the comparisons differ greatly. On its eighth full-length album, The Righteous & The Butterfly, Mushroomhead has created its most definitive album to date. Consisting of three drummers, three vocalists, a keyboardist, a guitarist and a bassist, the band has a unique take on the genre, pulling in varied styles and influences. The band’s classic sound is further bolstered by the return of vocalist Jmann after a nine-year absence. On its 14 tracks, the band’s trademark Mr. Bungle influences are decorated with edgy alt-metal flourishes and industrial overtones. Each track boasts catchy, singable choruses and memorable melodies. There are a few piano-driven segments to add to the rumbling rhythm section, underlying swirling keyboard samples and chugging riffs. Even at 14 tracks, The Righteous & The Butterfly flies by without losing any of its intrigue factor or memorability.
