NERVOCHAOS - The Art Of Vengeance

Brazil's Nervochaos are building up a solid catalogue of reliable thrash-tinged death, the band certainly not blowing minds but really doing a good job of just being... yeah, reliable, solid, just sturdy as hell. The slower trudge of tunes like "From Below And Not Above" or closer "Lightless" is a surprise highlight here, the band dragging the swamps with much skill, while their default mode is a brisker take on death metal, one that brings to mind bands like Malevolent Creation: simple, not fully bogged down in bass-drenched madness, but with a slight Teutonic thrash edge (see "The Legacy Is Pain") that is not often found in USDM. So, it works, but Nervochaos still struggle with personality issues. It's not like I will ever be listening to another band and blurt out "This sounds like Nervochaos!"; it's not even likely I will spend too much time thinking about this band unless they've got a new release out. Hard to fault them much beyond that, though, as sometimes there is just a lot to be said for such a single-minded approach to meat-and-potatoes death.
