NORTH - Through Raven's Eyes

Cool little two-song digital-only EP here from Arizona's North, the release acting as a teaser for the band's upcoming third album (their first for Prosthetic) as both these songs will appear on it. Opener "Old Blood" is very reminiscent of Sumac or Isis' more concise moments, the sludge smart and brainy, but without lessening the sonic impact. I love how as the song goes on, the bpm ticker just gets lower and slower, until you get to a point where the open space is the heaviest of all: excellent stuff.

Too bad the second "song," "Silverfeather", is just an atmospheric non-song of effects and meandering noise that takes five-and-a-half minutes to go nowhere (seriously, raise of hands: who likes stuff like that?). So, a 6.0 rating for one song is a bit extreme, but this is quality stuff; if this was a full EP or a solid full-length of material of that one song's calibre, it'd be an easy 8.0, so the 6.0 represents that, and sign me up for seeing what the band gets up to on the full-length.
