PAGANIZER - On The Outskirts Of Hades

So, remember how there was that Johansson & Speckmann project, and you always see the title and wonder who the hell Johansson is? He plays bass in about 60 bands, including the very cool Down Among The Dead Men, and this one: Paganizer. Here, the death metal is primitive and ugly, and the band know what they're doing, having beaten their crusted death down to a perfected pulp over the course of nine (!) full-length albums.

Love the vibe here, “Adjacent To Purgatory” having not only the best DM song title of the year, but also a galloping d-beat tempo (which is always the best tempo). When the drummer switches from the fast beat to the blast beat, it's just this side of unhinged and sloppy, and the excitement is just perfect (also: best closing two seconds of a DM song this year). The title track closes off this four-song EP with a good slower part before the two-step begins again; ain't nothing new here, but Paganizer deliver it with both passion and a very enjoyable, honest, not-quite-perfect delivery, which is just perfect.
